Vansina, een Frank Zappa-fan op de middelbare school, begon als tiener aan een carrière als jazzsaxofonist en verdiepte zich in opnames van de titanen van het instrument, van Lester Young tot Charlie Parker, John Coltrane, Sonny Rollins, Cannonball Adderley , Eric Dolphy en Ornette Coleman. Halverwege de jaren 90 begon Vansina aan het conservatorium, zowel aan het Koninklijk Conservatorium van Brussel, waar hij drummer Teun Verbruggen ontmoette en een langdurige samenwerking begon, als aan het Koninklijk Conservatorium van Den Haag, waar hij les kreeg van tenorsaxofonist /klarinettist John Ruocco. De altsaxofoon werd door de jaren heen vaak Vansina's favoriete instrument in zijn opnames en uitvoeringen, hoewel hij ook sopraan, tenor en bariton speelt, evenals klarinet en fluit.
In 2003 richtten Vansina en Verbruggen samen het label Rat Records(Rare and Treacherous) op, die dat jaar zijn eerste album uitbracht: Trio Music van het drietal Vansina, Verbruggen en de in IJsland geboren, in Nederland wonende contrabassist Gulli Gudmundsson (die net als Vansina ook studeerde aan het Koninklijk Conservatorium van Den Haag). Interpretaties van klassieke jazzcomposities versmelten met origineel materiaal en vrije improvisaties, het Vansina-Verbruggen-Gudmundsson Trio - ook bekend als VVG - werd een doorlopend voorstel, met de dubbeldisc In Orbit-set uitgebracht door Rat in 2005 en Tokio Quantize volgde in 2007 ; de laatste twee releases bevatten gastoptredens van Jozef Dumoulin op Fender Rhodes en Magic Malik op fluit.
Terwijl Vansina met VVG op Rat Records stond, werd de saxofonist door bandleider/componist/klarinettist Peter Vermeersch afgetapt voor lidmaatschap van het massale avant-ensemble Flat Earth Society Orchestra. Vansina verscheen voor het eerst op Psychoscout (Crammed Discs, 2006), en is ook te horen op latere FES-releases als Answer Songs (Zonk, 2009), Cheer Me, Perverts! (Crammed Discs, 2009), 13 (Igloo, 2013), en de live-collectie Call Sheets, Riders & Chicken Mushroom: Live Recordings 2000-2012 (Igloo, 2014).
Demons Of Shame

Voordat hij naar buiten zou treden als volwaardig leider van zijn eigen creatieve jazzensemble, had Vansina echter blijkbaar een aantal zaken uit de weg te ruimen: een album met Zappa-achtige artrock, jazzrock, en geluidsexperimentisme getiteld Nirvana Bonus and the Demons of Shame, uitgegeven door Rat in 2009. Met Vansina aan het hoofd van zijn Demons of Shame-band met Verbruggen, bassist Pierre Vervloesem, toetsenist Peter Vandenberghe en gitarist Gil Mortio, demonstreerde de saxofonist niet alleen zijn bekwaam riet karbonades, maar oefende zijn stembanden als een kromgetrokken crooner en schreeuwer op nummers als "What's Wrong with You" en "(I Don't Know A) Place to Go."
Het jaar daarop vormde Vansina de groep die een belangrijk vehikel zou worden voor zijn latere uitstapjes naar "serieuze" creatieve jazz als bandleider, componist en saxofonist. Vansina speelde in trio- en kwartetopstellingen in de Belgische scene, inclusief zijn eigen dates in het Hopper Café in Antwerpen, toen hij formeel het Bruno Vansina Quartet oprichtte, opnieuw met Verbruggen en ook met gitarist Bert Cools en bassist Nathan Wouters. Door Vansina's ruimtelijke, sfeervolle en expressieve jazzcomposities te spelen, begon de groep in 2011 aan een korte tournee door Mexico en in maart 2012 betrad ze de System Two-studio in Brooklyn, New York -- met Jos Machtel die Wouters op bas verving en met de bekende Amerikaanse vibrafonist Steve Nelson als prominente gast -- om Stratocluster op te nemen. Gemixt en gemasterd door Mike Marciano, werd het album uitgebracht door de W.E.R.F. label een maand nadat de sessies waren afgerond. Met de toevoeging van pianist Bart Van Caenegem aan de groep in 2013, werd de saxofonistenband omgevormd tot het Bruno Vansina Quintet, dat, met Nathan Wouters terug op bas, terugkeerde naar Mexico voor drie concerten datums.
In december verscheen de band, na meer line-upwisselingen met Christian Mendozza nu op piano en Stefan Lievestro op bas, in de Antwerpse Rataplan-zaal als de basis van het pas gedoopte Vansina Orchestra, met het vijftal aangevuld met 11 blazers die Vansina’s composities vertolkten, nieuw gearrangeerd door trombonist Dree Peremans, leider van het Rebirth::Collective octet. Het volledige ensemble - nu met bassist Stefan Lievestro in het kernkwintet samen met Vansina, Verbruggen, Cools en Mendozza, en inclusief voormalig Vansina-leraar John Ruocco, en Magic Malik in de blazerssectie - nam de in Rataplan in première gebrachte muziek op met ingenieur Walter de Niel op Studio Toots in Brussel in januari 2014. Het resulterende album van door Gil Evans en Charles Mingus beïnvloede creatieve jazz met grote ensembles, Morning Forest, ook bekend als Nose Up Bottom Down, werd in juni van dat jaar uitgebracht door Rat.
De invloeden leken van overal te komen aangewaaid: van Steve Coleman en Wayne Shorter tot zelfs Frank Zappa en Ravel. Ook ontwaar je in de zeven wisselende composities hier en daar Braziliaanse of Afrikaanse echo’s, zoals bij ‘Fiesta Festivo’ waarin vrolijkheid overheerst met de drum en sax als het ware in een chaotische dans. Of het uitdagende ‘Ploink’, wild en bevrijdend, met drumroffels waarin de fluitist exotische vogels lijkt te evoceren! Het maakt dat de composities een mondiale reikwijdte krijgen met veel afwisseling: bespiegelend, wiegend, mysterieus, disharmonisch of gepijnigd.
In 2015 maakte Vansina een geavanceerd schimmenspel met live muziek getiteld: “Het serpent”. Katrien Vandergooten en Isabelle Dekeyser (dansers uit de stal van Anna Teresa De Keersmaeker (P.A.R.T.S.) namen het schimmenspel voor hun rekening. Bruno Vansina , Pierre Vervloesem (X-Legged-Sally, Flat Earth Society Orchetsra) en Frank Van Eycken (Spectra) speelde de muziek. Vansina koos voor de muziek allemaal liedjes uit het exotica repertoire van Martin Denny en Les Baxter. Pierre Vervloesem herwerkte de muziek nadat hij minutieus was uitgeschreven door Vansina. Een eerste voorstelling vond plaats in “Wolke” (Brussel), een project van Teun Verbuggen. Een jaar later speelde “Het Serpent” op het Europees jeugd film festival alsook op het Spinrag festival (Kortrijk) en het Krokus festival (Hasselt). Samen met Dimitri Duquennoy werd het script in 2015 herwerkt en bijgeschaafd en de voorstelling kreeg de nieuwe naam “MaiTé, het meisje en de vogel”
De muziek uit deze kindervoorstelling werd ook concertant uitgevoerd door een 8 koppige band, het “Orchestra Exotica” met onder meer Pierre Vervloesem, Peter Vandenberghe, Kobe Proesmans, Simon Segers, Filip Vandenbril en Frank Van Eycken. Deze muziek werd vastgelegd op een dubbeldisc “Orchestra Exotica plays Martin Denny”. Deze set omvat de muziek uit de voorstelling “Het Serpent” in ene kleine bezetting en de meer concertante versie in grote bezetting.

In 2018 trok Bruno Vansina Quartet -met Ceril Obermüller op bas, Kobe proesmans op percussie en Teun Verbrufgen op de edrums- op muzikaal avontuur. Enkele keren wordt de band aangevuld door Benjamin Sauzereau op gitaar. Eén jaar lang, bezocht de band elke maand een bijzondere plek: een schaatsbaan, autosnelweg, velodroom of kermis. De uitdaging: de locatie deel laten uitmaken van het musiceren.
Op 20/02/2020 werd -in samenwerking met de “de Singel” en “Jazzlab”, dit concept vertaald naar de concertzaal onder de tittel “12/12” (twaalf locaties in twaalf maanden). Nu met Falk Schrauwen op de percusie en Benjamin Sauzereau op gitaar als vast lid van wat nu het Vansina Quintet is. In de filmpjes van de nummers wordt de locaties een alternatieve grafische partituur. Ze sturen de muziek, maar de muzikanten grijpen ook in. Deze muziek werdt uitgebracht op Rat Records als “1212 Outdoor” (RAT 056) de muziek gespeeld op de verschillende locaties- en “1212 Indoor” (RAT 045), dezelvde muziek maar nu opgenomen in de studio met het Vansina Quintet.
In 2020/21, midden in de Covid crisis, afgesneden van elke muzikale ‘live’ situatie, dook Vansina in zijn archieven van onaf en onuitgebracht materiaal. Dit materiaal bestond uit ruwe demo’s voor eerdere projecten maar ook uit studio opnames, ooit gemaakt. Met voldoende tijd op handen werden partijen ingespeeld door Vansina zelf en door vrienden, elk bij hen thuis. Vansina maakte ook al het artwork. Het resultaat zijn 6 albums die verschenen onder de noemer “Lost Socks’s”. Verloren en vergeten opname’s, composities, projecten … als een mandje met vergeten onvolledige sokken paren.
Een eerste release was “St. Cecilia Recordings” (ORTO 18). Negen spontane improvisaties gemaakt door het Vansina-Verbruggen-Gudmundsson trio in 2008. De muziek werd zelf opgenomen door het trio in een kleine vervallen concertzaal genaamd St. Cecilia in Vansina's geboortestad, Hoogstraten, België. Het opgenomen materiaal werd in 2015 geselecteerd en gemixt door Pierre Vervloesem. Deze opname zou de laatste opname van het VVG-trio blijken te zijn en markeerde een nieuwe richting in hun muziek. Het gebruik van elektronica was nog niet zozeer in de mode als nu in de geïmproviseerde jazzscene in België. Helaas eindigde het trio kort nadat ze deze opname hadden gemaakt en hun nieuwe muziek werd nooit live uitgevoerd.
De tweede release was “Presenting the Demon’s Of Shame” (RAT 052). Dit album kwam uit onder onder het nieuwe en iets ingetogener alter ego 'Urbaan Vonnis' omdat het eerdere album -Nirvana Bonus and the Demon's Of Shame- uit 2008 schreeuwde om zijn opvolger. Vansina schreef 13 jaar eerder een bijna compleet tweede album. Nu, na al die jaren - “dit durf ik nooit meer live op te voeren” - vond hij de tijd rijp om deze demo's verder af te werken. Opnieuw doet Vansina een beroep op de gitaar, basgitaar en toverschaar van Pierre Vervloesem. De drums werden ingespeeld door Jordi Geuens, bekend van onder meer Selah Sue. Een deel van de toetsen werdt ingespeeld door David Thomaere. Alle vocals, saxen, fluiten, en aanvullend synht werk werd ingespeeld daar Vansina zelf.
Een derde release was “Stratoduster” (RAT 053). Deze opname is gemaakt in 2011 als een soort pre-productie voor wat weer een Vansina-album “Stratocluster” (WERF 105) is geworden. Deze band toerde twee keer in Mexico, vandaar de albumhoes. Beluister het geweldige spel van Bert Cools! Hij moet begin twintig zijn geweest terwijl hij op zijn gele Telecaster speelde.
Een vierde realse was “Sitcom ‘85” (RAT 054). “I will probably never do such a good album again. This may turn out to be my chef-d’oeuvre”.
Een vijfde en laatste realse onder de noemer “Lost Sock’s” was een beschijden trio opname. Deze opname met Teun Verbruggen en Pascal Niggenkemper dateert uit 2015 en is gemaakt in New York tijdens een tournee door de VS met het Flat Earth Society Orchestra. Vansina had Pascal Niggenkemper een jaar eerder ontmoet tijdens een repetitie met Steve Nelson ter voorbereiding van zijn 'Stratocluster'-album. “We hadden een vrije dag in New York, namen contact op met Pascal en reserveerden een kleine studio in de kelder. Ik herinner me dat we al na een paar uur weer buiten stonden ergens in een rustige buurt van Brooklyn, de zon scheen en ik zat te kletsen met Teun Verbruggen, wachtend op een taxi die ons terug 'downtown' zou brengen. Wat is een betere manier om de middag door te brengen? We leefden de droom. Dat gevoel koester ik bij dit ingetogen album “A New York Recording” -BV
Vansina Trio

In 2020/21 begon Vansina als opvolger van John Ruocoo les te geven aan het Koninklijk Concervatorium van Brussel, het concervatorium waar Vansina zelf ook nog heeft gezeten. Hier leerde Vansina de jonge bassiste (electrisch) Louise Van Den Heuvel kennen. Na slechts enkele repetities samen met weederom Teun Verbruggen, wist Vansina dat het goed zat, dat er nieuw trio geboren was. De ondertussen 25 jaar lange samenwerkingen in tal van projecten tussen Vansina en Verbruggen maakt van hen een symbiotisch duo. Louise slaagt er in met jeugdige energie, vertrouwen en branie zich mee deel te maken van hun muziek. Net als Gulli Gudmundsson in het VVG trio levert Louise ook composities aan. Het’nieuwe” Vansina Trio maakte reeds zijn eerste opnamen. Voorjaar 2023 plannen ze een eerste CD.
de Singer “artist in residence”

Voor het seizoen 22/23 werdt Vansina gevraagd als “artist in residence” in jazzclub “de Singer” te Rijkevorsel. Vansina deed alles samen vijf projeten:
Pierre Vervloesem band.
Vansina leerde Vervloesem meer dan 20 jaar geleden kennen bij Flat Earth Society Orchestra (FES). Als snel was duidelijk dat ze een grote gedeelde fascinatie hadden voor Frank Zappa (maar ook Talking Heads, Martin Denny, John Hassel …) Mede hierdoor waren ze jarenlang kamergenoot tijdens de verschillende internationale tournées met FLath Art Society.Muzikaal vinden ze elkaar meer in meer in verschillende projecten van mezelf (Nirvana Bonus, Het meisje en de vogel, Orchestra Exotica, Urbaan Vonnis, Sitcom 85’) of van PV (Caca, Simple, Flambant Neuf, 30 Years Of Succes) en er staan er nog enkele op stapel.
De band van Vervloesem speelt gewoonlijk enkel repertoire van Vervloesem maar voor de gelegenheid wordt het repertoire uitgebreid met composities uit de albums Urbaan Vonnis Presenting & Sitcom ’85 van Vansina. Het werdt een avond met tonnen energie, de nodige humor en muzikale absurditeiten maar vooral een samenwerking tussen twee muzikanten en vrienden, een avond van copains, twee handen op één buik.
Vansina New Stars “a bebop celabration”
Met dit project breng Vansina aan de hand van eigen composities een ode aan Charlie Parker. De bezetting voor dit project gaat terug op een opname sessie van Bird uit 1947 die hem steeds vrolijk maakte tijdens de vele auto ritten op een vakantie in Italië.

Voor dit project opende Vansina één van zijn archiefkaften met de werktittel “oude composities”. Het bleken een handvol schetsen en probeersel te zijn uit zijn conservatorium tijd bij John Ruocco. Nu Vansina ze terug zag en doorspeelde, merkte hij hoe hard hij toentertijd geïnspireerd en gefascineerd was door door Charlie Parker, het grote altsaxofoon icoon. Het zijn meestal eenvoudige laadsheets, melodietjes op Blues schema’s, Rhythm Changes en andere typische Bebop vehikels. Het zijn eenvoudige scores, niet te veel toeters en bellen die moeten gespeeld worden door doorgewinterde “jazz cats”. De energie en de intentie of manier van spelen is belangrijker dan de partituur.

Naar aanleiding van zijn “artist in residence” in de Singer en een residentie in Werkplaats Walter, voortbouwend op de ervaring met het Vansina Orchestra uit 2014, begon Vansina in mei 2023 jongstleden aan een nieuw avontuur met meer orkestrale klanken. De blazers maken deze keer plaats voor een strijkersensemble, de drums moeten plaats delen met een heuse batterij percussionisten. De muzikale reus ‘Magic’ Malik Mezzadri sluit opnieuw mee de rangen. het objectief zijn geen zeemzoete arrangementen maar diep gewortelde muziek met elementen van Steve Coleman (e.a) en knipogen naar de exotische klanken van Les Baxter en Martin Denny.
Vansina broeit al jaren op een vervolgalbum op zijn “Morning Forest” uit 2014. Dit vervolg album zal opgenomen worden in de Bijloke, aansluitend aan een concert ter afsluiting van “Wonderland” festival.

(2018)In 2018 trok Bruno Vansina Quartet -met Ceril Obermüller op bas, Kobe proesmans op percussie en Teun Verbrufgen op de edrums- op muzikaal avontuur. Enkele keren wordt de band aangevuld door Benjamin Sauzereau op gitaar. Eén jaar lang, bezocht de band elke maand een bijzondere plek: een schaatsbaan, autosnelweg, velodroom of kermis. De uitdaging: de locatie deel laten uitmaken van het musiceren.
Op 20/02/2020 werd -in samenwerking met de “de Singel” en “Jazzlab”, dit concept vertaald naar de concertzaal onder de tittel “12/12” (twaalf locaties in twaalf maanden). Nu met Falk Schrauwen op de percusie en Benjamin Sauzereau op gitaar als vast lid van wat nu het Vansina Quintet is. In de filmpjes van de nummers wordt de locaties een alternatieve grafische partituur. Ze sturen de muziek, maar de muzikanten grijpen ook in. Deze muziek werdt uitgebracht op Rat Records als “1212 Outdoor” (RAT 056) de muziek gespeeld op de verschillende locaties- en “1212 Indoor” (RAT 045), dezelvde muziek maar nu opgenomen in de studio met het Vansina Quintet.
Lost Sock’s
(2021)In 2020/21, midden in de Covid crisis, afgesneden van elke muzikale ‘live’ situatie, dook Vansina in zijn archieven van onaf en onuitgebracht materiaal. Dit materiaal bestond uit ruwe demo’s voor eerdere projecten maar ook uit studio opnames, ooit gemaakt. Met voldoende tijd op handen werden partijen ingespeeld door Vansina zelf en door vrienden, elk bij hen thuis. Vansina maakte ook al het artwork. Het resultaat zijn 6 albums die verschenen onder de noemer “Lost Socks’s”. Verloren en vergeten opname’s, composities, projecten … als een mandje met vergeten onvolledige sokken paren.
Een eerste release was “St. Cecilia Recordings” (ORTO 18). Negen spontane improvisaties gemaakt door het Vansina-Verbruggen-Gudmundsson trio in 2008. De muziek werd zelf opgenomen door het trio in een kleine vervallen concertzaal genaamd St. Cecilia in Vansina's geboortestad, Hoogstraten, België. Het opgenomen materiaal werd in 2015 geselecteerd en gemixt door Pierre Vervloesem. Deze opname zou de laatste opname van het VVG-trio blijken te zijn en markeerde een nieuwe richting in hun muziek. Het gebruik van elektronica was nog niet zozeer in de mode als nu in de geïmproviseerde jazzscene in België. Helaas eindigde het trio kort nadat ze deze opname hadden gemaakt en hun nieuwe muziek werd nooit live uitgevoerd.
De tweede release was “Presenting the Demon’s Of Shame” (RAT 052). Dit album kwam uit onder onder het nieuwe en iets ingetogener alter ego 'Urbaan Vonnis' omdat het eerdere album -Nirvana Bonus and the Demon's Of Shame- uit 2008 schreeuwde om zijn opvolger. Vansina schreef 13 jaar eerder een bijna compleet tweede album. Nu, na al die jaren - “dit durf ik nooit meer live op te voeren” - vond hij de tijd rijp om deze demo's verder af te werken. Opnieuw doet Vansina een beroep op de gitaar, basgitaar en toverschaar van Pierre Vervloesem. De drums werden ingespeeld door Jordi Geuens, bekend van onder meer Selah Sue. Een deel van de toetsen werdt ingespeeld door David Thomaere. Alle vocals, saxen, fluiten, en aanvullend synht werk werd ingespeeld daar Vansina zelf.
Een derde release was “Stratoduster” (RAT 053). Deze opname is gemaakt in 2011 als een soort pre-productie voor wat weer een Vansina-album “Stratocluster” (WERF 105) is geworden. Deze band toerde twee keer in Mexico, vandaar de albumhoes. Beluister het geweldige spel van Bert Cools! Hij moet begin twintig zijn geweest terwijl hij op zijn gele Telecaster speelde.
Een vierde realse was “Sitcom ‘85” (RAT 054). “I will probably never do such a good album again. This may turn out to be my chef-d’oeuvre”.
Een vijfde en laatste realse onder de noemer “Lost Sock’s” was een beschijden trio opname. Deze opname met Teun Verbruggen en Pascal Niggenkemper dateert uit 2015 en is gemaakt in New York tijdens een tournee door de VS met het Flat Earth Society Orchestra. Vansina had Pascal Niggenkemper een jaar eerder ontmoet tijdens een repetitie met Steve Nelson ter voorbereiding van zijn 'Stratocluster'-album. “We hadden een vrije dag in New York, namen contact op met Pascal en reserveerden een kleine studio in de kelder. Ik herinner me dat we al na een paar uur weer buiten stonden ergens in een rustige buurt van Brooklyn, de zon scheen en ik zat te kletsen met Teun Verbruggen, wachtend op een taxi die ons terug 'downtown' zou brengen. Wat is een betere manier om de middag door te brengen? We leefden de droom. Dat gevoel koester ik bij dit ingetogen album “A New York Recording” -BV
Vansina Trio
(2022)In 2020/21 begon Vansina als opvolger van John Ruocoo les te geven aan het Koninklijk Concervatorium van Brussel, het concervatorium waar Vansina zelf ook nog heeft gezeten. Hier leerde Vansina de jonge bassiste (electrisch) Louise Van Den Heuvel kennen. Na slechts enkele repetities samen met weederom Teun Verbruggen, wist Vansina dat het goed zat, dat er nieuw trio geboren was. De ondertussen 25 jaar lange samenwerkingen in tal van projecten tussen Vansina en Verbruggen maakt van hen een symbiotisch duo. Louise slaagt er in met jeugdige energie, vertrouwen en branie zich mee deel te maken van hun muziek. Net als Gulli Gudmundsson in het VVG trio levert Louise ook composities aan. Het’nieuwe” Vansina Trio maakte reeds zijn eerste opnamen. Voorjaar 2023 plannen ze een eerste CD.
de Singer “artist in residence”
(2022/23)Voor het seizoen 22/23 werdt Vansina gevraagd als “artist in residence” in jazzclub “de Singer” te Rijkevorsel. Vansina deed alles samen vijf projeten:
Pierre Vervloesem band.
Vansina leerde Vervloesem meer dan 20 jaar geleden kennen bij Flat Earth Society Orchestra (FES). Als snel was duidelijk dat ze een grote gedeelde fascinatie hadden voor Frank Zappa (maar ook Talking Heads, Martin Denny, John Hassel …) Mede hierdoor waren ze jarenlang kamergenoot tijdens de verschillende internationale tournées met FLath Art Society.Muzikaal vinden ze elkaar meer in meer in verschillende projecten van mezelf (Nirvana Bonus, Het meisje en de vogel, Orchestra Exotica, Urbaan Vonnis, Sitcom 85’) of van PV (Caca, Simple, Flambant Neuf, 30 Years Of Succes) en er staan er nog enkele op stapel.
De band van Vervloesem speelt gewoonlijk enkel repertoire van Vervloesem maar voor de gelegenheid wordt het repertoire uitgebreid met composities uit de albums Urbaan Vonnis Presenting & Sitcom ’85 van Vansina. Het werdt een avond met tonnen energie, de nodige humor en muzikale absurditeiten maar vooral een samenwerking tussen twee muzikanten en vrienden, een avond van copains, twee handen op één buik.
Vansina New Stars “a bebop celabration”
Met dit project breng Vansina aan de hand van eigen composities een ode aan Charlie Parker. De bezetting voor dit project gaat terug op een opname sessie van Bird uit 1947 die hem steeds vrolijk maakte tijdens de vele auto ritten op een vakantie in Italië.

Voor dit project opende Vansina één van zijn archiefkaften met de werktittel “oude composities”. Het bleken een handvol schetsen en probeersel te zijn uit zijn conservatorium tijd bij John Ruocco. Nu Vansina ze terug zag en doorspeelde, merkte hij hoe hard hij toentertijd geïnspireerd en gefascineerd was door door Charlie Parker, het grote altsaxofoon icoon. Het zijn meestal eenvoudige laadsheets, melodietjes op Blues schema’s, Rhythm Changes en andere typische Bebop vehikels. Het zijn eenvoudige scores, niet te veel toeters en bellen die moeten gespeeld worden door doorgewinterde “jazz cats”. De energie en de intentie of manier van spelen is belangrijker dan de partituur.

(2023)Naar aanleiding van zijn “artist in residence” in de Singer en een residentie in Werkplaats Walter, voortbouwend op de ervaring met het Vansina Orchestra uit 2014, begon Vansina in mei 2023 jongstleden aan een nieuw avontuur met meer orkestrale klanken. De blazers maken deze keer plaats voor een strijkersensemble, de drums moeten plaats delen met een heuse batterij percussionisten. De muzikale reus ‘Magic’ Malik Mezzadri sluit opnieuw mee de rangen. het objectief zijn geen zeemzoete arrangementen maar diep gewortelde muziek met elementen van Steve Coleman (e.a) en knipogen naar de exotische klanken van Les Baxter en Martin Denny.
Vansina broeit al jaren op een vervolgalbum op zijn “Morning Forest” uit 2014. Dit vervolg album zal opgenomen worden in de Bijloke, aansluitend aan een concert ter afsluiting van “Wonderland” festival.

A Frank Zappa fan in high school, Vansina began the serious pursuit of a career as a jazz saxophonist while a teenager, immersing himself in recordings by the titans of the instrument, from Lester Young to Charlie Parker, John Coltrane, Sonny Rollins, Cannonball adderley, Eric Dolphy and Ornette Coleman. In the mid-'90s Vansina began conservatory studies, both at the Royal Conservatory of Brussels, where he met and began a longstanding collaborative relationship with drummer Teun Verbruggen, and the Royal Conservatory of The Hague, Netherlands, where he was taught by tenor saxophonist/clarinetist John Ruocco. The alto saxophone would often become Vansina's instrument of choice in his recordings and performances over the years, although he also plays soprano and baritone as well as clarinet and flute.
VVG Trio
(2003)
In 2003 Vansina and Verbruggen co-founded the Rat Records (Rare and Treacherous) label, which released its first album that year: Trio Music by the threesome of Vansina, Verbruggen, and Iceland-born, Netherlands-based double bassist Gulli Gudmundsson (who, like Vansina, also studied at the Royal Conservatory of The Hague, receiving a master's degree from there in 1999). Melding interpretations of classic jazz compositions with original material and free improvisations, the Vansina-Verbruggen-Gudmundsson Trio -- aka VVG -- became an ongoing proposition, with the double-disc In Orbit set released by Rat in 2005 and Tokio Quantize following in 2007; the latter two releases included guest appearances by Jozef Dumoulin on Fender Rhodes and Magic Malik on flute.
FES
(2003 - present day)
While Vansina was appearing with VVG on Rat Records, the saxophonist was tapped by bandleader/composer/clarinetist Peter Vermeersch for membership in the massive avant ensemble Flat Earth Society Orchestra. Vansina first appeared on Psychoscout (Crammed Discs, 2006), and can also be heard on such subsequent FES releases as Answer Songs (Zonk, 2009), Cheer Me, Perverts! (Crammed Discs, 2009), 13 (Igloo, 2013), and the live collection Call Sheets, Riders & Chicken Mushroom: Live Recordings 2000-2012 (Igloo, 2014).
Demons Of shame

Before he would step out as a full-fledged leader of his own creative jazz ensemble, however, Vansina apparently had a bit of rather demented business to get out of the way: an album of Zappa-esque damaged art rock, jazz-rock, and sonic experimentalism entitled Nirvana Bonus and the Demons of Shame, issued by Rat in 2009. With Vansina leading his Demons of Shame band featuring Verbruggen, bassist Pierre Vervloesem, keyboardist Peter Vandenberghe, and guitarist Gil Mortio, the saxophonist not only demonstrated his able reed chops, but exercised his vocal cords as a warped crooner and shouter on such tracks as "What's Wrong with You" and "(I Don’t Know A) Place to Go."
Vansina Quartet

The following year, Vansina formed the group that would become an important vehicle for his subsequent forays into "serious" creative jazz as a bandleader, composer, and saxophonist. Vansina had been playing in trio and quartet lineups around the Belgian scene, including his own dates at the Hopper Café in Antwerp, when he formally established the Bruno Vansina Quartet, again including Verbruggen and also featuring guitarist Bert Cools and bassist Nathan Wouters. Playing Vansina's spacious, atmospheric, and expressive jazz compositions, the group embarked on a short tour of Mexico in 2011 and in March 2012 entered Brooklyn, New York's System Two studio -- with Jos Machtel replacing Wouters on bass and with noted American vibraphonist Steve Nelson as a featured guest -- to record Stratocluster. Engineered, mixed, and mastered by Mike Marciano, the album was released by the W.E.R.F. label a month after the sessions had been completed. With the addition of pianist Bart Van Caenegem to the fold in 2013, the saxophonist's band was transformed into the Bruno Vansina Quintet, which, with Nathan Wouters back on bass, returned to Mexico for three concert dates.
Vansina Orchestra

In December, the band, having undergone more lineup changes with Christian Mendozza now on piano and Stefan Lievestro on bass, appeared at Antwerp's Rataplan venue as the foundation of the newly christened Vansina Orchestra, with the five-piece supplemented by 11 horn players performing Vansina compositions newly arranged by trombonist Dree Peremans, leader of the Rebirth::Collective octet. The full ensemble -- now with bassist Stefan Lievestro in the core quintet along with Vansina, Verbruggen, Cools, and Mendozza, and including former Vansina teacher John Ruocco in the horn section -- recorded the Rataplan-premiered music with engineer Walter de Niel at Brussels' Studio Toots in January 2014. The resultant album of Gil Evans and Charles Mingus-influenced large-ensemble creative jazz, Morning Forest aka Nose Up Bottom Down, was released by Rat in June of that year.
The influences seemed to come from everywhere: from Steve Coleman and Wayne Shorter to even Frank Zappa and Ravel. You also detect Brazilian or African echoes here and there in the seven changing compositions, such as with 'Fiesta Festivo' in which cheerfulness predominates with the drum and sax in a chaotic dance, as it were. Or the challenging 'Ploink', wild and liberating, with drum rolls in which the flutist seems to evoke exotic birds! It gives the compositions a global reach with a lot of variety: contemplative, rocking, mysterious, disharmonious or pained.
In 2015 Vansina made an advanced shadow play with live music entitled: “The Serpent”. Katrien Vandergooten and Isabelle Dekeyser (dancers from the stable of Anna Teresa De Keersmaeker (P.A.R.T.S.) performed the shadow play. Bruno Vansina , Pierre Vervloesem (X-Legged-Sally, Flat Earth Society Orchetsra) and Frank Van Eycken (Spectra) played the music. Vansina chose all songs from the exotica repertoire of Martin Denny and Les Baxter for the music. Pierre Vervloesem reworked the music after it had been meticulously written out by Vansina. A first performance took place in “Wolke” (Brussels), a project by Teun Verbuggen. A year later "Het Serpent” played at the European youth film festival as well as at the Spinrag festival (Kortrijk) and the Krokus festival (Hasselt). Together with Dimitri Duquennoy, the script was reworked and refined in 2015 and the performance received the new name “MaiTé, the girl and the bird”
The music from this children's performance was also performed in concert by an 8-piece band, the “Orchestra Exotica” with, among others, Pierre Vervloesem, Peter Vandenberghe, Kobe Proesmans, Simon Segers, Filip Vandenbril and Frank Van Eycken. This music was recorded on a double disc “Orchestra Exotica plays Martin Denny”. This set includes the music from the performance “Het Serpent” in a small line-up and the more concert version in a large line-up.

A few times the band is supplemented by Benjamin Sauzereau on guitar. For one year, the band visited a special place every month: a skating rink, motorway, velodrome or fairground. The challenge: making the location part of the music making.
On 20/02/2020 - in collaboration with the “de Singel” and “Jazzlab”, this concept was translated to the concert hall under the title “12/12” (twelve locations in twelve months). Now with Falk Schrauwen on percussion and Benjamin Sauzereau on guitar as a permanent member of what is now the Vansina Quintet. In the cutscenes of the songs, the locations become an alternate graphical score. They control the music, but the musicians also intervene. This music was released on Rat Records as “1212 Outdoor” (RAT 056) the music played at the various venues and “1212 Indoor” (RAT 045), the same music but now recorded in the studio with the Vansina Quintet.

In 2020/21, in the middle of the Covid crisis, cut off from any musical 'live' situation, Vansina delved into his archives of unfinished and unreleased material. This material consisted of raw demos for previous projects as well as studio recordings, once made. With plenty of time at hand, games were played by Vansina herself and by friends, each at their home. Vansina also did all the artwork. The result are 6 albums that appeared under the name “Lost Socks's”. Lost and forgotten recordings, compositions, projects… pair like a basket of forgotten incomplete socks.
A first release was “St. Cecilia Recordings” (ORTO 18). Nine spontaneous improvisations created by the Vansina-Verbruggen-Gudmundsson trio in 2008. The music was self-recorded by the trio in a small dilapidated concert hall called St. Cecilia in Vansina's hometown, Hoogstraten, Belgium. The recorded material was selected and mixed in 2015 by Pierre Vervloesem. This recording would prove to be the last recording of the VVG trio and marked a new direction in their music. The use of electronics was not so much fashionable as it is now in the improvised jazz scene in Belgium. Unfortunately, the trio ended soon after making this recording and their new music was never performed live.
The second release was "Presenting the Demon's Of Shame" (RAT 052). This album was released under the new and slightly more subdued alter ego 'Urbaan Vonnis' because the earlier album -Nirvana Bonus and the Demon's Of Shame- from 2008 was crying out for its successor. Vansina wrote an almost complete second album 13 years earlier. Now, after all these years - “I never dare to perform this live again” - he thought the time was right to finish these demos. Again Vansina calls on the guitar, bass guitar and magic scissors of Pierre Vervloesem. The drums were played by Jordi Geuens, known from Selah Sue, among others. Some of the keys were played by David Thomaere. All vocals, saxes, flutes, and additional synth work was played by Vansina himself.
A third release was “Stratoduster” (RAT 053). This recording was made in 2011 as a kind of pre-production for what has become another Vansina album “Stratocluster” (WERF 105). This band toured Mexico twice, hence the album cover. Listen to the great playing of Bert Cools! He must have been in his early twenties playing his yellow Telecaster.

A fifth and last realse under the name "Lost Sock's" was a modest trio recoprding. This recording with Teun Verbruggen and Pascal Niggenkemper dates from 2015 and was made in New York during a tour of the US with the Flat Earth Society Orchestra. Vansina had met Pascal Niggenkemper a year earlier at a rehearsal with Steve Nelson in preparation for his 'Stratocluster' album. “We had a day off in New York, contacted Pascal and booked a small studio in the basement. I remember that after only a few hours we were outside somewhere in a quiet neighborhood of Brooklyn, the sun was shining and I was chatting with Teun Verbruggen, waiting for a taxi to take us back downtown. What better way to spend the afternoon? We lived the dream. I cherish that feeling with this subdued album “A New York Recording” -BV
Vansina Trio

In 2020/21, Vansina started teaching at the Royal Conservatory of Brussels, the conservatory where Vansina herself also attended, succeeding John Ruocoo. Here Vansina met the young bass player (electric) Louise Van Den Heuvel. After only a few rehearsals together with Teun Verbruggen again, Vansina knew it was all right, that a new trio was born. The 25-year long collaboration in numerous projects between Vansina and Verbruggen makes them a symbiotic duo. Louise succeeds in making herself part of their music with youthful energy, confidence and swagger. Like Gulli Gudmundsson in the VVG trio, Louise also contributes compositions. The 'new' Vansina Trio has already made its first recordings. Spring 2023 they plan a first CD.

Pierre Vervloesem band
Vansina met Vervloesem more than 20 years ago at the Flat Earth Society Orchestra (FES). It soon became clear that they had a great shared fascination for Frank Zappa (but also Talking Heads, Martin Denny, John Hassel ...). Partly because of this, they were roommates for years during the various international tours with FLath Art Society. Musically, they find each other more in more in various projects of my own (Nirvana Bonus, The Girl and the Bird, Orchestra Exotica, Urban Vonnis, Sitcom 85') or of PV (Caca, Simple, Flambant Neuf, 30 Years Of Success) and there are a few more in the pipeline. Vervloesem's band usually only plays Vervloesem's repertoire, but for the occasion the repertoire is expanded with compositions from Vansina's albums Urban Vonnis Presenting & Sitcom '85. It turned out to be an evening with tons of energy, the necessary humor and musical absurdities, but above all a collaboration between two musicians and friends, an evening of two friends.
Vansina New Stars “a bebop celabration”
With this project, Vansina pays tribute to Charlie Parker on the basis of her own compositions. The line-up for this project goes back to a 1947 recording session by Bird that kept him happy during the many car rides on a holiday in Italy.

For this project, Vansina opened one of his archive covers with the working title “old compositions”. It turned out to be a handful of sketches and experiments from his conservatory time with John Ruocco. Now that Vansina saw them again and played them through, he noticed how much he was inspired and fascinated at the time by Charlie Parker, the great alto saxophone icon. They are mostly simple load sheets, melodies on Blues schemes, Rhythm Changes and other typical Bebop vehicles. They are simple scores, not too many bells and whistles that have to be played by seasoned “jazz cats”. The energy and the intention or way of playing is more important than the score.

Following his “artist in residence” at the de Singer and a residency at Werkplaats Walter, building on the experience with the Vansina Orchestra from 2014, Vansina embarked on a new adventure in May 2023 with more orchestral sounds. This time the wind instruments make way for a string ensemble, the drums have to share space with a real battery of percussionists. The musical giant 'Magic' Malik Mezzadri joins the ranks again. the objective is not sugary arrangements, but deeply rooted music with elements of Steve Coleman (e.a.) and nods to the exotic sounds of Les Baxter and Martin Denny.
Vansina has been brewing for years on a follow-up album to his “Morning Forest” from 2014. This follow-up album will be recorded in de Bijloke, following a concert to close the “Wonderland” festival.

VVG Trio
(2003)In 2003 Vansina and Verbruggen co-founded the Rat Records (Rare and Treacherous) label, which released its first album that year: Trio Music by the threesome of Vansina, Verbruggen, and Iceland-born, Netherlands-based double bassist Gulli Gudmundsson (who, like Vansina, also studied at the Royal Conservatory of The Hague, receiving a master's degree from there in 1999). Melding interpretations of classic jazz compositions with original material and free improvisations, the Vansina-Verbruggen-Gudmundsson Trio -- aka VVG -- became an ongoing proposition, with the double-disc In Orbit set released by Rat in 2005 and Tokio Quantize following in 2007; the latter two releases included guest appearances by Jozef Dumoulin on Fender Rhodes and Magic Malik on flute.
FES
(2003 - present day)While Vansina was appearing with VVG on Rat Records, the saxophonist was tapped by bandleader/composer/clarinetist Peter Vermeersch for membership in the massive avant ensemble Flat Earth Society Orchestra. Vansina first appeared on Psychoscout (Crammed Discs, 2006), and can also be heard on such subsequent FES releases as Answer Songs (Zonk, 2009), Cheer Me, Perverts! (Crammed Discs, 2009), 13 (Igloo, 2013), and the live collection Call Sheets, Riders & Chicken Mushroom: Live Recordings 2000-2012 (Igloo, 2014).
Demons Of shame
(2009)Before he would step out as a full-fledged leader of his own creative jazz ensemble, however, Vansina apparently had a bit of rather demented business to get out of the way: an album of Zappa-esque damaged art rock, jazz-rock, and sonic experimentalism entitled Nirvana Bonus and the Demons of Shame, issued by Rat in 2009. With Vansina leading his Demons of Shame band featuring Verbruggen, bassist Pierre Vervloesem, keyboardist Peter Vandenberghe, and guitarist Gil Mortio, the saxophonist not only demonstrated his able reed chops, but exercised his vocal cords as a warped crooner and shouter on such tracks as "What's Wrong with You" and "(I Don’t Know A) Place to Go."
Vansina Quartet
(2011)The following year, Vansina formed the group that would become an important vehicle for his subsequent forays into "serious" creative jazz as a bandleader, composer, and saxophonist. Vansina had been playing in trio and quartet lineups around the Belgian scene, including his own dates at the Hopper Café in Antwerp, when he formally established the Bruno Vansina Quartet, again including Verbruggen and also featuring guitarist Bert Cools and bassist Nathan Wouters. Playing Vansina's spacious, atmospheric, and expressive jazz compositions, the group embarked on a short tour of Mexico in 2011 and in March 2012 entered Brooklyn, New York's System Two studio -- with Jos Machtel replacing Wouters on bass and with noted American vibraphonist Steve Nelson as a featured guest -- to record Stratocluster. Engineered, mixed, and mastered by Mike Marciano, the album was released by the W.E.R.F. label a month after the sessions had been completed. With the addition of pianist Bart Van Caenegem to the fold in 2013, the saxophonist's band was transformed into the Bruno Vansina Quintet, which, with Nathan Wouters back on bass, returned to Mexico for three concert dates.
Vansina Orchestra
(2014)In December, the band, having undergone more lineup changes with Christian Mendozza now on piano and Stefan Lievestro on bass, appeared at Antwerp's Rataplan venue as the foundation of the newly christened Vansina Orchestra, with the five-piece supplemented by 11 horn players performing Vansina compositions newly arranged by trombonist Dree Peremans, leader of the Rebirth::Collective octet. The full ensemble -- now with bassist Stefan Lievestro in the core quintet along with Vansina, Verbruggen, Cools, and Mendozza, and including former Vansina teacher John Ruocco in the horn section -- recorded the Rataplan-premiered music with engineer Walter de Niel at Brussels' Studio Toots in January 2014. The resultant album of Gil Evans and Charles Mingus-influenced large-ensemble creative jazz, Morning Forest aka Nose Up Bottom Down, was released by Rat in June of that year.
The influences seemed to come from everywhere: from Steve Coleman and Wayne Shorter to even Frank Zappa and Ravel. You also detect Brazilian or African echoes here and there in the seven changing compositions, such as with 'Fiesta Festivo' in which cheerfulness predominates with the drum and sax in a chaotic dance, as it were. Or the challenging 'Ploink', wild and liberating, with drum rolls in which the flutist seems to evoke exotic birds! It gives the compositions a global reach with a lot of variety: contemplative, rocking, mysterious, disharmonious or pained.
Shadow Play
(2015)In 2015 Vansina made an advanced shadow play with live music entitled: “The Serpent”. Katrien Vandergooten and Isabelle Dekeyser (dancers from the stable of Anna Teresa De Keersmaeker (P.A.R.T.S.) performed the shadow play. Bruno Vansina , Pierre Vervloesem (X-Legged-Sally, Flat Earth Society Orchetsra) and Frank Van Eycken (Spectra) played the music. Vansina chose all songs from the exotica repertoire of Martin Denny and Les Baxter for the music. Pierre Vervloesem reworked the music after it had been meticulously written out by Vansina. A first performance took place in “Wolke” (Brussels), a project by Teun Verbuggen. A year later "Het Serpent” played at the European youth film festival as well as at the Spinrag festival (Kortrijk) and the Krokus festival (Hasselt). Together with Dimitri Duquennoy, the script was reworked and refined in 2015 and the performance received the new name “MaiTé, the girl and the bird”
The music from this children's performance was also performed in concert by an 8-piece band, the “Orchestra Exotica” with, among others, Pierre Vervloesem, Peter Vandenberghe, Kobe Proesmans, Simon Segers, Filip Vandenbril and Frank Van Eycken. This music was recorded on a double disc “Orchestra Exotica plays Martin Denny”. This set includes the music from the performance “Het Serpent” in a small line-up and the more concert version in a large line-up.

(2018)In 2018, the Bruno Vansina Quartet - with Ceril Obermüller on bass, Kobe Proesmans on percussion and Teun Verbrufgen on the edrums - embarked on a musical adventure. A few times the band is supplemented by Benjamin Sauzereau on guitar. For one year, the band visited a special place every month: a skating rink, motorway, velodrome or fairground. The challenge: making the location part of the music making.
On 20/02/2020 - in collaboration with the “de Singel” and “Jazzlab”, this concept was translated to the concert hall under the title “12/12” (twelve locations in twelve months). Now with Falk Schrauwen on percussion and Benjamin Sauzereau on guitar as a permanent member of what is now the Vansina Quintet. In the cutscenes of the songs, the locations become an alternate graphical score. They control the music, but the musicians also intervene. This music was released on Rat Records as “1212 Outdoor” (RAT 056) the music played at the various venues and “1212 Indoor” (RAT 045), the same music but now recorded in the studio with the Vansina Quintet.
Lost Sock’s
(2021)In 2020/21, in the middle of the Covid crisis, cut off from any musical 'live' situation, Vansina delved into his archives of unfinished and unreleased material. This material consisted of raw demos for previous projects as well as studio recordings, once made. With plenty of time at hand, games were played by Vansina herself and by friends, each at their home. Vansina also did all the artwork. The result are 6 albums that appeared under the name “Lost Socks's”. Lost and forgotten recordings, compositions, projects… pair like a basket of forgotten incomplete socks.
A first release was “St. Cecilia Recordings” (ORTO 18). Nine spontaneous improvisations created by the Vansina-Verbruggen-Gudmundsson trio in 2008. The music was self-recorded by the trio in a small dilapidated concert hall called St. Cecilia in Vansina's hometown, Hoogstraten, Belgium. The recorded material was selected and mixed in 2015 by Pierre Vervloesem. This recording would prove to be the last recording of the VVG trio and marked a new direction in their music. The use of electronics was not so much fashionable as it is now in the improvised jazz scene in Belgium. Unfortunately, the trio ended soon after making this recording and their new music was never performed live.
The second release was "Presenting the Demon's Of Shame" (RAT 052). This album was released under the new and slightly more subdued alter ego 'Urbaan Vonnis' because the earlier album -Nirvana Bonus and the Demon's Of Shame- from 2008 was crying out for its successor. Vansina wrote an almost complete second album 13 years earlier. Now, after all these years - “I never dare to perform this live again” - he thought the time was right to finish these demos. Again Vansina calls on the guitar, bass guitar and magic scissors of Pierre Vervloesem. The drums were played by Jordi Geuens, known from Selah Sue, among others. Some of the keys were played by David Thomaere. All vocals, saxes, flutes, and additional synth work was played by Vansina himself.
A third release was “Stratoduster” (RAT 053). This recording was made in 2011 as a kind of pre-production for what has become another Vansina album “Stratocluster” (WERF 105). This band toured Mexico twice, hence the album cover. Listen to the great playing of Bert Cools! He must have been in his early twenties playing his yellow Telecaster.
A fourth realse was "Sitcom '85" (RAT 054). “I will probably never do such a good album again. This may turn out to be my chef-d'oeuvre”.
A fifth and last realse under the name "Lost Sock's" was a modest trio recoprding. This recording with Teun Verbruggen and Pascal Niggenkemper dates from 2015 and was made in New York during a tour of the US with the Flat Earth Society Orchestra. Vansina had met Pascal Niggenkemper a year earlier at a rehearsal with Steve Nelson in preparation for his 'Stratocluster' album. “We had a day off in New York, contacted Pascal and booked a small studio in the basement. I remember that after only a few hours we were outside somewhere in a quiet neighborhood of Brooklyn, the sun was shining and I was chatting with Teun Verbruggen, waiting for a taxi to take us back downtown. What better way to spend the afternoon? We lived the dream. I cherish that feeling with this subdued album “A New York Recording” -BV
Vansina Trio
(2022)In 2020/21, Vansina started teaching at the Royal Conservatory of Brussels, the conservatory where Vansina herself also attended, succeeding John Ruocoo. Here Vansina met the young bass player (electric) Louise Van Den Heuvel. After only a few rehearsals together with Teun Verbruggen again, Vansina knew it was all right, that a new trio was born. The 25-year long collaboration in numerous projects between Vansina and Verbruggen makes them a symbiotic duo. Louise succeeds in making herself part of their music with youthful energy, confidence and swagger. Like Gulli Gudmundsson in the VVG trio, Louise also contributes compositions. The 'new' Vansina Trio has already made its first recordings. Spring 2023 they plan a first CD.
the Singer “artist in residence”
(2022/23)For the 22/23 season, Vansina was asked as artist in residence at jazz club “de Singer” in Rijkevorsel. Vansina did all five projects together:
Pierre Vervloesem band
Vansina met Vervloesem more than 20 years ago at the Flat Earth Society Orchestra (FES). It soon became clear that they had a great shared fascination for Frank Zappa (but also Talking Heads, Martin Denny, John Hassel ...). Partly because of this, they were roommates for years during the various international tours with FLath Art Society. Musically, they find each other more in more in various projects of my own (Nirvana Bonus, The Girl and the Bird, Orchestra Exotica, Urban Vonnis, Sitcom 85') or of PV (Caca, Simple, Flambant Neuf, 30 Years Of Success) and there are a few more in the pipeline. Vervloesem's band usually only plays Vervloesem's repertoire, but for the occasion the repertoire is expanded with compositions from Vansina's albums Urban Vonnis Presenting & Sitcom '85. It turned out to be an evening with tons of energy, the necessary humor and musical absurdities, but above all a collaboration between two musicians and friends, an evening of two friends.
Vansina New Stars “a bebop celabration”
With this project, Vansina pays tribute to Charlie Parker on the basis of her own compositions. The line-up for this project goes back to a 1947 recording session by Bird that kept him happy during the many car rides on a holiday in Italy.

For this project, Vansina opened one of his archive covers with the working title “old compositions”. It turned out to be a handful of sketches and experiments from his conservatory time with John Ruocco. Now that Vansina saw them again and played them through, he noticed how much he was inspired and fascinated at the time by Charlie Parker, the great alto saxophone icon. They are mostly simple load sheets, melodies on Blues schemes, Rhythm Changes and other typical Bebop vehicles. They are simple scores, not too many bells and whistles that have to be played by seasoned “jazz cats”. The energy and the intention or way of playing is more important than the score.

Vansina Orchestra - part II
(2023)Following his “artist in residence” at the de Singer and a residency at Werkplaats Walter, building on the experience with the Vansina Orchestra from 2014, Vansina embarked on a new adventure in May 2023 with more orchestral sounds. This time the wind instruments make way for a string ensemble, the drums have to share space with a real battery of percussionists. The musical giant 'Magic' Malik Mezzadri joins the ranks again. the objective is not sugary arrangements, but deeply rooted music with elements of Steve Coleman (e.a.) and nods to the exotic sounds of Les Baxter and Martin Denny.
Vansina has been brewing for years on a follow-up album to his “Morning Forest” from 2014. This follow-up album will be recorded in de Bijloke, following a concert to close the “Wonderland” festival.
