In his new opus 'Blauw Kou', Bruno Vansina returns to the familiar orchestral atmospheres he explored in 2014 with his ambitious Vansina Orchestra. While the brass armada is replaced by a string ensemble and the drums are flanked by a battalion of percussionists, it's still the brilliant 'Magic' Malik Mezzadri who locks up the ranks. On the menu, meticulous and uncompromising arrangements, deeply rooted in jazz, with rhythmic elements reminiscent of Dave Holland or Steve Coleman, spiced up with nods to the pioneering exotica of Les Baxter and Martin Denny and the unbridled melodic verve of the great Frank Zappa.

Recorded 2, 3 September, 2023 at de Bijloke by Roel Snellebrand.
Mixed  by Roel Snellebrand and Bruno Vansina, December 2023.
Masterded by Gert Van Hoof.

In 2018 Bruno Vansina went on a musical adventure. Every month, his band visited a quirky place: an ice rink, motorway, velodrome or fair. The challenge: to incorporate the location into their music making. Each month produced a short film, the sum of which was a musical visual story in 12 chapters entitled “1212 Outdoor”. Now this concept is transposed indoor into a studio recording.

In 2018 Bruno Vansina went on a musical adventure. Every month, his band visited a quirky place: an ice rink, motorway, velodrome or fair. The challenge: to incorporate the location into their music making. The camera registered the music, the sounds, the events. Each month produced a short film, the sum of which was a musical visual story in 12 chapters. These twelve recordings together also form an auditory story. The result is pure, sometimes rough and out of tune, unrehearsed but often amusing and fun to listen to. Beauty is in the beholder.

ANYR - A New York recording

Bruno Vansina - alto saxophone
Pascal Niggenkemper - double bass
Teun Verbruggen - drums

This recording with Teun Verbruggen and Pascal Niggenkemper dates from 2015 and was done in New York during a tour through the USA with the Flat Earth Society Orchestra. I had met Pascal one year before at a rehearsal with Steve Nelson in preparation for my 'Stratocluster' album.

“We had a day off in New York, contacted Pascal and reserved a little basement studio. I remember that after just a couple of hours we were back outside somewhere in a quiet neighborhood of Brooklyn, the sun was shining and I was chatting with Teun Verbruggen, waiting for a taxi to take us back 'downtown'. What better way to spend the afternoon? We where living the dream. I cherish that feeling with this modest album.” - BV

Mixed by Joseph Branciforte, New York, 16th March 2015.
Master by Pierre Vervloesem at studio Fiasco, Bruxelles, May 2015.

Bruno Vansina - saxophones, flute, synths, keys (tracks 4, 10 , 11)
Pierre Vervloesem - bass, guitar, vocals (track 12)
David Thomaere - keys (tracks 1, 2, 3, 6, 7, 8, 9, 11, 12)
Peter Vandenberghe - piano & obscure vocals (track 8)
Jordi Geuens - drums

This is what I do when I forget for a moment that I'm a saxophonist, that I'm a ‘supposedly’ trained ‘jazz’ musician. I release this album under the new and slightly more modest alter ego 'Urbaan Vonnis' because the earlier album -Nirvana Bonus and the Demon's Of Shame- from 2008 is just crying out for its successor. 13 years ago I already made an almost complete second album. Now, after all these years - I will never dare to perform this live again - I thought the time was right to finish these demos further. Once again I call on the guitar, bass guitar and magic scissors of Pierre Vervloesem. Enjoy and hopefully laugh as hard as I do !!!

Recorded by Vansina, Vervloesem, Geuens, Thomaere, Vandenberghe.
Mixed and mastered by Vervloesem.

All songs by Bruno Vansina except track 12 by Vansina & Vervloesem.

St. Cecilia Recordings

Bruno Vansina - saxophones, clarinet, keys, electronics
Gulli Gudmundsson - accoustic & electric bass, electronics
TeunVerbuggen - drums, electronics.

Nine spontaneous improvisation done by the Vansina-Verbruggen-Gudmundsson trio back in 2008. The music was self recorded by the trio in a little run down concert room called St. Cecilia in Bruno’s town of birth, Hoogstraten, Belgium. The recorded material was selected and mixed in 2015 by Pierre Vervloesem and is now finally ready for release. This recording would turn out to be the last recording by the VVG trio and marked a new direction in their music. The use of electronics was not yet so much in fashion as it it now a day’s in the improvised jazz scene in Belgium. Unfortunately the trio ended soon after they did this recording and their new music was never performed life. Now, thirteen years later, you can enjoy this document digitally, enjoy!

Recorded by the VVG trio, 2008
Mixed and mastered by Pierre Vervloesem, 2015.

Plays Martin Denny

For the kids (6+) & family play MaiTé, the girl and the bird, Bruno Vansina was inspired by the famous exotica of Martin Denny and Les Baxter. His compositions, rearranged by colleague Pierre Vervloesem, remained true to the originals, but have a very contemporary feel to them as well, and soon started to lead a life on their own. This resulted in a new band - the 7-piece Orchestra Exotica - that performs the playful and multicolored music of Denny and Baxter with a healthy dose of humor, cunning craft and an infectious drive.

Magic Malik (flute)
Bruno Vansina (alto saxophone)

Gulli Gudmundsson (double bass)
Teun Verbruggen (drums)

This is the 3rd Vansina-Verbruggen-Gudmunsson trio recording and like on the previous album (In Orbit), it features the two musical giants, Magic Malik and Jozef Dumoulin. Vansina prefers the sound and energy of the moment so again the band recorded ‘live’. This time Vansina was writing songs for this specific ensemble ft. Magic Malik and Dumoulin. Heavenly inspired by Malik, there is lot’s of rhythm and beautiful unison melodies that work perfect with flute and the alto saxophone. The title track was written on the laptop an a bus while on tour in Japan with Flat Earth Society Orchestra. Vansina recalls: “It was extremely late, I was super tired, the whole bus was drunk and noisy when I wrote this song.”

Recorded by Chris Weeda, live at Zuiderpershuis, Antwerp, on March 23, 2007.
Mixed by Chris Weeda at Studio Le Roy, Amsterdam, on April 21 & 22, 2007.

Magic Malik (flute, vocals)
Jozef Dumoulin (piano, rodes)

In Orbit - part 1 (CD1) was the second album and first studio recording of the Vansina-Verbruggen-Gudmundsson trio. By now the trio had some repertoire worked out. Around the same period the trio had a gig in L’Archiduc in Brussels. They invited Magic Malik and Jozef Dumoulin to join the gig. By coincidence sound engineer and friend Roel Snellebrand called he bought some new recording gear he wanted to test, so he came to the gig and recorded everything. The night turned out “magic” and a selection was released as In Orbit - part 2 (CD2). Only one mic for the drums (we needed a mic for the piano), a piano terribly out of tune ,Teun Verbuggen with 39° of fever, no rehearsal, scores copied at a Fax machine in a hotel on the other side of the street, it all added to the magic of the night!

Vansina-Verbruggen-Gudmundsson trio plays on all tracks. Jozef Dumoulin plays on track 4, 6 & 8 of Disc 1 and all tracks of Disc 2. Malik Mezzadri plays on all tracks of Disc 2.

Disc 1: Recorded March and Mai 2005 at Studio Le Roy in Amsterdam by chris Weeda.
Disc 2: Recorded March 2005 at "L'Archiduc" in Brussels by Roel Snellebrand.

Trio Music

Bruno Vansina (alto saxophone)
Gulli Gudmundsson (bass)
Teun Verbruggen (drums)

Trio Music is Vansina’s first album. Still very young at the time, the band , the music, the album, it all happend simply because it had to happen. The repertoire is a mix of more traditional jazz repertoire, original composition and free improvisation. The trio was experimenting and trying lot’s of different material from which this album features only a small token. Vansina and band where what they call “growing up in public”.

Recorded 'live' at BUSTER, September-December 2003 by Guy Lejeune.
Mixed and Mastered at Studio Le Roy, Amsterdam, 1th & 23rd of March 2004 by Chris Weeda.

Released January 1, 2004
